Big Rapids Has Its Movie Theater Back. Here's the Downtown Fall Around It.

October 15, 2026

The Big Rapids Theater went six years without showing a film. On Friday, April 3, 2026, it reopened at 213 S. Michigan Ave., and 9&10 News reported that it brought cinema back to the community for the first time since the closure. This fall is the first full autumn with the theater open since then. Within a short walk, a pizza pub, a record shop and a newly opened business on North Warren Avenue have all arrived in the same twelve months.

So downtown Big Rapids in October 2026 has something it didn't have for most of the decade: a reason to stay on South Michigan Avenue after dinner. What follows is a look at what changed on that stretch and how the fall and holiday calendar fits around it, from tonight through the first weekend of December.

Six dark years, then two auditoriums and a third on the way

Owner Jordan Stancil reopened the theater after ten months of renovation. On opening day he welcomed customers to noon screenings while work was still underway. At the time, he said about half the building was finished, including two auditoriums, and he hoped the rest, including a third auditorium, would be done by fall.

The theater's own site now describes the building as open seven days a week, with two remodeled auditoriums with new luxury seating and "a third, larger auditorium in Fall 2026." That wording describes the third room as being added. It does not say the room is finished, so for now it's a work in progress. The now-showing page lists Verity and Forgotten Island, and the homepage schedule shows the next showtimes on Thursday, October 8. The theater's line is 231-598-9108 if you want to check a showtime or ask how the third auditorium is coming along.

The renovation matters beyond movies because of timing. When the Ferris State Torch looked ahead at downtown changes in January, the theater's renovation was one of several projects on the list, next to a planned restaurant a block or so north. Both projects have since opened.

What filled in along South Michigan

Three addresses on the same avenue tell most of the story.

Address Business What it is Where things stand
126 S. Michigan Ave. Cottage Inn Pizza & Pub Pub-style pizza restaurant Location page says "Now Open" with current hours
210 S. Michigan Ave., Suite 2 Books and Beats Used books, vinyl records, guitar, bass and piano lessons Soft opening was planned for April 7, 2026
213 S. Michigan Ave. Big Rapids Theater Movie theater with two remodeled auditoriums Reopened April 3, 2026, with a third auditorium being added this fall

Cottage Inn Pizza & Pub is the newest of the three. In January the Torch reported a pub-style Cottage Inn planned for 126 S. Michigan Ave. and aiming for "late summer or early fall." Its official location page now reads "Now Open" and lists hours. The page doesn't give an opening day, but the restaurant is serving. Dinner a short walk from a reopened theater is the simplest version of a downtown evening, and for six years only half of it was available.

Books and Beats sits across the avenue from the theater at 210 S. Michigan Ave., Suite 2. The Torch profiled the shop in April. Siblings Hudson and Bella Pease run it, selling used books and vinyl and offering guitar, bass and piano lessons. They planned a soft opening for April 7, the Tuesday after the theater reopened. We haven't seen a later report on the shop, so look at the storefront before you plan an evening around it.

The newest name in the area is a block off Michigan. The Big Rapids Regional Chamber listed a grand opening and ribbon cutting for Big Rapids Boarding Company at 107 N. Warren Ave. on September 25, 2026. The Chamber listing doesn't describe the business, so a walk past is the easiest way to find out what opened.

Together the theater, the pub and the record shop add up to a block where dinner, a film and some browsing can happen in one stop. For most of the last six years, that wasn't possible downtown.

A small new landmark at Hemlock Park

One more 2026 addition belongs here because the same local hands built it. On Friday, September 18, Hemlock Park held a ribbon cutting for Ryco, a fish-shaped sculpture that doubles as a recycling bin. According to the Torch, Ferris welding students made it, the local General Federation of Women's Clubs paid for it, and a fifth-grade class chose its name. It's meant to promote recycling and sustainability. It's also a good stop on a fall walk with kids who'd like to see what a welding class can do with scrap metal.

The downtown calendar, October through December

With the theater, the pub and the shops open, the scheduled events land on a downtown with more going on around them. These dates come from the City of Big Rapids community events page and the Downtown Big Rapids events page. Neither page shows when it was posted, and listings can change, so check before you go.

Thursday, October 22: Flannel Comedy Tour at Cranker's. Cranker's Restaurant & Brewery at 213 S. State St. hosts the Flannel Comedy Tour at 7 p.m. Admission is $10, and it's for ages 16 and up.

Saturday, October 31: Skeleton Skurry 5K and the DBA Fall Festival. Halloween falls on a Saturday this year, and downtown fills the morning. The Skeleton Skurry 5K runs from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., with participants gathering at City Hall. The Downtown Business Association's Fall Festival also starts at 10 a.m., with Trunk or Treat, inflatables, food trucks, a pumpkin roll and a pie-eating contest. Both start at 10, so a family can do the run first and then the festival without leaving downtown, and the theater is open seven days a week for the afternoon.

Saturday, November 21: Festival of Lights Parade. The downtown parade runs from 6 to 8 p.m. and includes a tree lighting, Santa, stories, caroling and hot chocolate. If your business, club or family wants to walk in it, entry registration closes Monday, November 16. This is the first holiday parade with the theater open on the same street since the closure.

Tuesday, December 1: Community Giving Day. From 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Big Rapids Eagles, 18361 16 Mile Rd.

Friday and Saturday, December 4 and 5: Star of Wonder. This drive-through nativity runs from 6 to 8:30 p.m. both nights at CranHill Ranch in Rodney, and the city listing describes it as free. It's a short drive out of town, an easy cap to the first weekend of December.

Building a fall evening around the block

With the calendar and the new addresses side by side, a few combinations work without much planning:

  1. A weeknight movie with dinner first. Cottage Inn at 126 S. Michigan, then a show at the theater at 213 S. Michigan. Check the theater's site for showtimes, since the schedule lists screenings by day.
  2. Comedy night on October 22. Doors at Cranker's for the 7 p.m. show. The $10 ticket and the 16-and-up rule make it an easy night out with older teens.
  3. Halloween morning, then the afternoon downtown. The 5K and the Fall Festival in the morning, with the theater and the Michigan Avenue shops open afterward.
  4. Parade night on November 21. The Festival of Lights runs from 6 to 8 p.m., early enough to grab dinner on the avenue before the 6 p.m. start or a slice afterward.

The common thread is that South Michigan Avenue has businesses open in the evening again. The theater's third auditorium, still listed as a fall 2026 addition, will add capacity as the holidays approach.

The theater's return touches everything else on this stretch, from the pub up the street to the record shop across the avenue. At Daniella Bell Group, we watch every new storefront and ribbon cutting on Michigan Avenue because those are the details that make a Big Rapids week feel like yours. If you'd like to talk about life near downtown, or just compare notes on the best seat in the new auditoriums, we'd love to hear from you. Find Your Beautiful Life.
